How roadside assistance works

Call RACV Emergency Roadside Assistance

Call 13 11 11, let us know your name, where you’re located and what’s gone wrong. Not yet a roadside member? We can sign you up when you call.
Wait for help

We’ll send a yellow patrol van to you. If in metro Melbourne you’ll get an SMS to track its arrival. Please secure any dogs or animals before we arrive.
Patrol van arrives usually within one hour

Our roadside assistance expert will ask you questions and run a diagnostic test to find out what’s wrong with your vehicle.
Repair or tow

8 out of 10 issues are fixed on the spot. If we can’t, we’ll arrange to tow your vehicle to a repairer.

Common emergencies we can help with

Keep moving with our roadside assistance packages, including service for battery electric or hybrid vehicles.

Flat tyre

We’ll swap out your flat or damaged tyre with your roadworthy spare.

Ran out of fuel

Up to 5 litres of free fuel to get you to the nearest service station, across Victoria.

Flat battery

We’ll jump start your flat battery or help you buy and install a new one.

Electric vehicle out of charge

We’ll tow you to the nearest accessible charging station or your preferred destination within your km limit.

Locked out of your vehicle

If we can't unlock your vehicle, we’ll contribute to a professional locksmith.

Towing your vehicle

We’ll tow you to a chosen location within your km limit, or to the nearest RACV Service Centre.

Replace some minor parts

Such as fan belts and globes (Extra Care and Total Care). Consumables such as oil are not included.

Transport to get you where you need to go

If we can’t fix your issue on the spot, we’ll contribute to alternative transport, taxis or accommodation.

Roadside assistance provides breakdown support for mechanical issues and problems like flat batteries, punctured tyres and lockouts.

Car insurance is a separate product to roadside assistance. All types of car insurance provide cover for damage you may unintentionally cause to people’s property or vehicles during a listed incident.

Depending on your level of cover, car insurance may also provide cover for damage caused to your vehicle during a listed event, such as collision, theft or attempted theft, vandalism, or fire.

Most vehicles — including cars, electric vehicles and motorcycles — are eligible for Emergency Roadside Assistance. Your vehicle does not need to be insured to be eligible.

Vehicles that are ineligible include:

vehicles participating in any trial, race or other activities of a like nature
commercial vehicles (including taxis) that are only used for business purposes
trade plated vehicles
vehicles that aren’t registered
vehicles beyond our size and weight restrictions.

Other things to consider

Assistance for motorcycles is limited to petrol and towing.
We may refuse to provide service if the attending expert considers your vehicle unroadworthy.

You can add vehicles in the RACV app, your online account, by calling 13 72 28 or visiting us in-store if you have:

Total Care (1-2 vehicles), and only added one vehicle
Total Care (3-5 vehicles), and only added 3 or 4 vehicles.

For all other plans, you’ll need to upgrade by calling 13 72 28 or visiting us in-store.
