Strong demand for EVs has brought sharper prices for electric cars and SUVs, with many now below $40,000. Chinese brands are leading the charge: BYD, Geely, Jaecoo, GWM, MG, Chery, Leapmotor and others. Here are the cheapest EVs you can buy in Australia right now.
2027 XPeng L03: price, specs and release date in Australia
The new XPeng L03 medium SUV is priced from $41,900 and puts the BYD Atto 3 and Geely EX5 on notice with its advanced tech, high spec and EV and range-extender plug-in hybrid powertrains. Here’s everything you need to know.
The all-new 2027 XPeng L03 is now on sale in Australia, sizing up as a swoopy coupe-style medium-sized electric SUV that’s big on tech and competitively priced against key rivals like the Geely EX5 and BYD Atto 3 Evo.
Positioned below the slightly larger XPeng G6, the L03 starts from less than $42,000 before on-road costs for either a single-motor/rear-drive EV (with a claimed 445km WLTP range) or a plug-in hybrid variant that the Chinese carmaker insists can travel more than 1000km before needing to refuel.
The new XPeng L03 is also available in a longer-range RWD EV format and higher-performance dual-motor/all-wheel drive layout. This flagship variant includes XPeng’s latest Turing AI Chip processor, paving the way for the brand’s Tesla FSD-style semi-autonomous driving system, dubbed NGP, to come on stream later in 2027.
The L03 is a big drawcard for XPeng as the new factory-run operation rapidly expands its line-up and looks to strengthen its presence in Australia with a broader retail network and improved support services.
Here’s the full rundown on the L03, plus what else is on sale – and on the horizon – from XPeng.

When does the XPeng L03 go on sale in Australia?
The 2027 XPeng L03 is available to order in Australia ahead of first customer deliveries expected before the end of this year.
How much does the new 2027 XPeng L03 cost?
There are four models on offer at launch for the 2027 XPeng L03, kicking off with the L03 RWD Standard Range EV that opens at $41,900 plus on-road costs. Without options – such as premium paint ($800) and a towbar ($1200) – the RRP translates to $45,766 drive-away for Victorian private buyers, according to the brand’s website.
This is the same price as the L03 Power X RWD Long Range range-extender plug-in hybrid (PHEV), which also retails from $41,900 plus ORCs, while the L03 RWD Long Range EV (520km WLTP) starts from $46,900 plus ORCs.
At the top of the range, the dual-motor L03 AWD Performance Ultra EV is priced from $53,900 plus ORCs.
The dollar figures place the L03 close to the new BYD Atto 3 Evo – which starts at an almost-identical $41,990 plus ORCs for the Dynamic, or $46,990 plus ORCs for the Premium – and the popular Geely EX5. The latter also opens at $41,990 plus ORCs for the EX5 Complete, while the long-range EX5 Inspire is priced from $45,990 plus ORCs.
Servicing of the Geely L03 is required every 12 months or 20,000km, whichever comes first. Capped price servicing costs are still to be announced through XPeng’s dealer network, which had around 50 dealers nationwide at last count but is fast expanding.
Under the new factory-backed distributor in Australia, XPeng’s new vehicle warranty stands at seven years (unlimited kilometres for private owners, 160,000km cap for commercial operators), while the high-voltage battery and related components (including the drive motor) come under a separate eight-year/160,000km warranty.
There are shorter terms for paint and rust at five and seven years respectively.

2027 XPeng L03 design and specification
Australia is set to become the first right-hand-drive market for the 2027 XPeng L03, which was unveiled in Munich in mid-2026 and is now rolling out to at least 65 countries.
Billed as the Chinese carmaker’s “most global model to date”, the L03 is a slippery coupe-style five-seater medium SUV with a sporting stance, fastback silhouette, frameless doors and a claimed class-leading aerodynamic drag coefficient of just 0.228Cd. The design team was led by former Ferrari exterior design chief JuanMa Lopez, who also crafted interiors at Lamborghini.
Smaller than the XPeng G6, the L03 measures 4650mm long (-108mm), 1920mm wide (same) and 1600mm high (-50mm), with a 2850mm wheelbase (-40mm). The result is more Cupra Tavascan than Ferrari Purosangue but engaging nonetheless, as RACV saw up close at the brand’s recent relaunch in Australia.
The minimum wheel size for L03 is 18-inch (up to 20” on Performance Ultra), while LED exterior lighting includes the headlights (with automatic control), daytime running lights, dynamic indicators and a full-length LED light strip across the rear end.
The standard exterior colour is white, while premium options include grey, black, purple and silver (availability dependent on model grade).
Inside, XPeng is aiming for a premium, high-tech feel with faux leather seat upholstery, “lounge-style” front seat design, velour trim on the pillars and headlining, “immersive” 256-colour ambient lighting, intelligent dual-zone climate control (with heat pump with electric air vent control), 15.6-inch centre touchscreen, 8.9-inch driver’s display and a generous 26.8-inch head-up display.
Dark grey interior trim is standard at the entry level, with a light grey option (no-cost) kicking in at higher tiers.
There’s a broad array of storage solutions in the L03 (37 of them, says XPeng), including a 7L drawer under the rear seat and an 89L front trunk. Cargo capacity is listed at 367L with the rear seats upright. The seatbacks are split 40/20/40 but don’t quite create a flat floor when folded down. Like most EVs, there is no spare wheel.
Maximum roof load is 75kg while braked towing capacity is 1500kg across the line-up, which should be sufficient for hauling small trailers. Maximum payload is 505kg for the RWD Standard Range (485kg with towbar).
The L03 is built using XPeng’s full-stack in-house technology architecture, unlocking some of the brand’s most advanced intelligent driving capabilities for export markets, including Australia (see our safety and technology section below).

What is the power and range of the XPeng L03?
The 2027 XPeng L03 RWD Standard Range has a single electric motor that produces 180kW of power and 264Nm of torque, driving the rear wheels. It draws energy from a 58.3kWh LFP battery that enables a driving range of up to 445km, based on the lab-based WLTP combined test standard. The entry car tips the scales at 1870kg.
In comparison, the L03 RWD Long Range has a bigger 71.2kWh LFP battery that consumes energy at a slightly higher rate (16.0 vs 15.3kWh/100km) and sees the SUV weigh in 70kg higher (1940kg) – but it enables a 520km range (WLTP). Although it uses the same electric motor as the RWD Standard Range, the bigger power pack delivers a stronger punch off the line, reaching 100km/h from standstill in 6.6 seconds.
The L03 AWD Performance Ultra reduces the 0-100km/h acceleration to an impressive 4.5 seconds, thanks to its dual-motor/all-wheel drive layout that boosts output to 285kW and 431Nm. It carries the 71.2kWh long-range battery but, as a heavier car (2040kg), the claimed WLTP driving range is pegged at 440km.
The rear-drive L03 Power X range-extender electric vehicle (REEV), or plug-in hybrid (PHEV), combines the 180kW/264Nm e-motor found in the RWD EV variants with a 63kW 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine that acts solely as a generator for the 37.25kWh battery. XPeng claims the system enables an excellent 215km EV-only driving range (WLTP), while the total range with a full tank of fuel (42L) and fully charged battery is a claimed a 1017km (WLTP).

The XPeng L03 is brimming with advanced safety tech, extending to NGP semi-autonomous driving before too long.
What safety and technology features on XPeng L03?
The 2027 XPeng L03 was “designed to meet global five-star safety standards”, according to the carmaker, which includes ANCAP for Australia. Local assessment is still to be conducted, but the sheer scale of advanced safety equipment on the SUV is impressive.
This extends to automatic collision notification and emergency call (eCall), while XPeng’s latest Tesla FSD-style semi-autonomous driving system, NGP (Navigation Guided Pilot) VLA 2.0, will start rolling out to international markets during 2027. XPeng says NGP will tap into the extensive driver assist tech to “understand and navigate highly complex real-world driving scenarios, bringing intelligent driving closer to how humans perceive and respond to the road”.
In terms of computer power, XPeng points to the L03’s development with triple Turing AI Chips that deliver up to 2250 TOPS (trillions of operations per second). However, local specs point to the Performance Ultra as the sole variant with a single Turing Chip, which suggests this will be the only variant to offer NGP for the time being.
Standard-issue advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) across the L03 range, under the XPilot Assist umbrella, include:
- Adaptive cruise control
- Autonomous emergency braking
- Front/rear cross traffic alert
- Lane centring assist, active lane keep assist
- Driver condition monitoring
- Traffic sign recognition
- Automatic/remote parking assistance (via smartphone)
- Remote forward/reverse driving (via phone)
- 360-degree surround-view camera with transparent chassis
The L03 has seven airbags, ISOFIX child restraint mounting points in the rear seat and a child presence detection system. A Pet mode is also included to support furry passengers.
Going beyond driving tech, the L03 is also the first model with an international version of the XPeng’s new “global intelligent cockpit experience” with XOS 6. This includes its latest AI voice assistant, which has apparently been rebuilt to support “more natural conversations, contextual understanding and seamless multilingual interaction” – a welcome improvement, if it proves to work well in an Australian context.
The L03 is fully integrated with Google Maps, which XPeng says supports native navigation, intelligent charging-route planning and navigation continuity across the main screen, instrument cluster and head-up display. There’s a broad range of connected services, allowing remote control of vehicle functions, along with Vehicle to Load (V2L) functionality.
Further down the track, XPeng also says Vehicle to Grid (V2G) technology will come to its cars in Australia.

The XPeng G9L large SUV will be the next big launch from the Chinese brand.
What cars does XPeng sell in Australia – and what’s coming?
The 2027 XPeng L03 joins the updated XPeng G6 electric medium SUV and the XPeng X9 electric seven-seater people-mover on sale in Australia. The XPeng G9L large SUV is also confirmed for our market, offering both EV and range-extender PHEV power, while the even larger GX seven-seater flagship SUV is also under consideration.
There’s also an XPeng L05 in the works, which is set to slot in between the L03 and G6, while a local business case is being considered for the P7 sedan.
Further afield, XPeng is also planning to offer a fully autonomous robotaxi in Australia once approval is granted and pilot schemes get up and running.
