Building your cyber safety

From phishing calls and texts to viruses and other fraudulent activity, cyber attacks are both on the rise and getting more sophisticated.

The best defence against these activities – which result in access to your passwords, account details or credit card details – is to become more cyber aware and resilient.

Common cyber threats and how they occur

Phishing scams

In phishing scams, scammers could contact you through emails, text messages, calls or unreliable websites. They often offer deals that sound too good to be true or pretend to be large organisations to trick you into sharing personal information.

Malware

Malware is malicious software that hackers use to gain unauthorised access to your computer or device. Malware is often delivered via a link or file in an email, SMS or online advertisement, and is activated when you click on the link or open the file.

Identity theft

Identity theft is when a hacker accesses personal information like your password or credit card and uses it to create fake identity papers, apply for real ones, steal money or gain other benefits. Watch out for unusual transactions across your online banking and email accounts.

Protecting your information online

ID verification processes

When you become an RACV customer or member, we take ID verification steps to confirm the details of your account and prevent others from accessing your online accounts and personal details.

Two-step verification

When you log in online or speak with our team on the phone, we will send a one-time code to your mobile or email address to verify that you are the one accessing your account.

Strong encryption

We use the strongest encryption methods to ensure your data is secure, and maintain arrangements to restrict access to it.

Established industry practices

We adhere to recognised industry standards in cybersecurity, including compliance with the ISO 27001 information security framework, cybersecurity training for all staff, and regular independent assessments of our cybersecurity program.

Identify and report scams

Don't engage with a person if it sounds suspicious. If it's over the phone, hang up. If it's an email, text message or message on social media, don't respond. You can report a scam online by visiting ScamWatch.

Follow good password practices

Create strong and unique passwords and keep them private. Avoid recycling passwords or using them on multiple accounts.

Update your devices

Keeping your devices updated is a simple and effective way to enhance your cyber security.

Enable two-step verification

With additional layers of security, it becomes more difficult for others to guess or breach your account details.

Ensure secure app downloads

The RACV App should only be downloaded from the official Apple App Store or Google Play Store to ensure security and authenticity.

What to do if your information has been compromised

Stolen password

If you think your password has been compromised, change it immediately to a new, unique and secure password. Update your RACV online account password at my.racv.com.au. A reputable password manager can also keep your online passwords safe.

Financial account at risk

If you're worried about the security of your credit/debit cards or bank account, contact your financial institution immediately.

Identity theft

If you've shared personal information like your driver's licence, Medicare card, passport or other forms of ID, contact IDCare for help. Additionally, access 12 months of credit reporting and dark web monitoring from Equifax.

Threats to release your data

If someone is threatening to release your data unless you pay, report this as a cyber crime at ReportCyber.
