European sports brand Cupra is expanding its line-up of electric vehicles in Australia with the launch of the all-new battery electric Tavascan. The Cupra Tavascan is a sharp-handling, mid-size electric SUV coupe priced from just $60,990 plus on-road costs.

Cupra has announced aggressive pricing for its new Tavascan medium SUV, which should see the new entrant warrant serious attention from buyers in the market for a dynamic electric SUV. The pricing of the entry model Tavascan puts it in the ballpark of the updated 2025 Tesla Model Y launched BYD Sealion 7.

Cupra is also promising a comprehensive aftersales offering through the Volkswagen Group's On EV program, an aftersales and warranty offering designed to give Australian electric car buyers peace of mind when moving to the new territory of electric car ownership.

That warranty includes a 5 year/unlimited kilometre vehicle warranty, 8 year/160,000 kilometre battery warranty and five years roadside assistance. Aftersales support promises parts availability for 15 years following the end of production.

How much does the Cupra Tavascan cost in Australia?

The Cupra Tavascan is available in two variants, with each taking power from a 77kWh battery.

The rear-wheel drive Cupra Tavascan Endurance is the most affordable model priced at $60,990 plus on-road costs, which is less than the cost of a turbo-petrol Volkswagen T-Roc R. It's equipped with a 210kW electric motor and offers promised electric driving range of up to 534km (WLTP).

The Cupra Tavascan duo is rounded out by the Cupra Tavascan VZ, a beefier all-wheel drive model with twin motors delivering 250kW and 545Nm. The increased power and top of the line specification see it priced at $74,490 plus on-road costs. Cupra says it's good for 499km (WLTP) driving range, the reduction due in part to the VZ's larger 21-inch wheel and tyre package.

What is the specification of the Cupra Tavascan?

The standard specification for the Cupra Tavascan Endurance includes 19-inch black and silver Vulcano alloy wheels, signature LED headlights with triangular daytime running lamps and illuminated front and rear Cupra emblems. Standard convenience features include a powered tailgate with 'kick' sensor, smart entry with 'sit-to-start' functionality and three-zone climate control with rear controls.

Included technology includes a 15-inch touchscreen infotainment system, wireless connectivity and smartphone charging, adaptive cruise control, and a suite of advanced driver assistance features.

An optional interior package is available on the Endurance for a $4500 premium and adds 20-inch Heckla alloy wheels, 360-degree camera, 'Dark Night' microfibre power front seats, 12-speaker Sennheiser premium sound system and ambient lighting.

The Cupra Tavascan VZ builds on the Endurance model's features. It includes the contents of the interior package and adds all-wheel drive, 21-inch Katla alloy wheels in copper, matrix LED headlights with adaptive high beam and a fixed panoramic glass roof with electric sunblind.

Drivers looking to further personalise their Cupra Tavascan will be able to order an extreme package for cars delivered from mid-year. For $8,000 the package adds 21-inch Etna forged alloy wheels in copper, performance tyres, 'CUP Racing' bucket front seats, Nappa leather interior in Enceladus Grey and front seat ventilation.

When does the Cupra Tavascan go on sale?

The Cupra Tavascan is on sale now in Australia with demonstrator vehicles available for test drives across the brand's network of showrooms.

What is the range of the new Cupra Tavascan?

Both Cupra Tavascan variants take power from the same modular 77kWh battery. In the rear wheel drive Endurance model, the battery is paired with a 210kW/545Nm motor while the twin motors in the Performance model will generate 250kW/545Nm.  The Endurance has a claimed driving range of up to 534km (WLTP), while the VZ has reduced range of 499km (WLTP).

The range is similar to what's attainable in the Kia EV5 long range models, which have a claimed driving range of up to 555km dependent on variant, however the Cupra Tavascan promises a more engaging driving experience.

The Cupra Tavascan can charge at up to 135kW on a fast charger and should charge from 10 to 80 per cent in 28 minutes. On an 11kW charger it will take up to 8 hours to charge from 0 to 100 per cent charge.

What is Cupra?

Cupra is part of Volkswagen Group Australia that also includes Volkswagen, Skoda and Audi.

The brand launched in Australia 2022, and is pitched at a motoring enthusiast audience, looking for European styling and driving prowess coupled with a high level of finish.

Cupra's first cars in Australia were the Leon small car, and Formentor and Ateca mid-size SUVs. They were followed by the European built Cupra Born electric small car, but the Cupra Tavascan is the only vehicle from the brand to be designed and engineering in Europe and manufactured in China.

Later in 2025, Cupra will introduce the new Terramar, a larger SUV powered by petrol and plug-in hybrid powertrain options. Formentor and Leon are also set to be updated this year, before the new Cupra Born VZ performance electric car rounds out a busy year for the brand.
