Travelling interstate? Different road rules might apply

Heading over the border? Sometimes the road rules can differ between states. Make sure you're up to speed on any restrictions imposed on learner or probationary drivers in the state or territory you're visiting before getting behind the wheel.

Victorian learner and probationary drivers travelling interstate

There are rules learner and probationary drivers need to know when travelling interstate. For example, some states require learner drivers to travel at a speed limit lower than the posted speed limit.

One example is NSW where:

  • learner drivers with a NSW licence are not allowed to travel at more than 90km/h where the posted speed limit is above 90km/h.
  • learner drivers with a Victorian licence are allowed to drive at up to the posted speed limit.

These rules aren't always clear for motorists travelling interstate and RACV has taken up the matter with VicRoads and the National Transport Commission, in an effort to make things clearer for learner and probationary drivers.
