July 29, 2024

Car brand Smart returns to Australia this year with a range of eye-catching electric cars, nine years after their last car was sold here.

Designed by Mercedes-Benz in Germany and manufactured in China, the new range of Smart electric cars destined for Australian showrooms will feature a choice of two small SUVs available in either single motor rear-wheel drive or Brabus-branded dual-motor all-wheel drive performance configurations.

While battery specifications are yet to be confirmed for Australian vehicles, it is expected that Smart electric vehicles (EV) will have a potential driving range (WLTP) of 400-455km, depending on model.

When are Smart electric cars available in Australia?

The Smart #1 and Smart #3 are now on sale in Australia, with the first cars expected to be delivered to buyers in September. Two Smart models will be available at launch, the Smart #1 crossover and Smart #3 crossover coupe, and each is significantly larger than the original smart two-seater city cars, closer in size to the Hyundai Kona small SUV.

How much will Smart electric cars cost in Australia?

The new Smart EV range is priced from $54,900 to $70,900 plus on-road costs. Both the Smart #1 and Smart #3 will be available in three models, the Pro+, Premium and BRABUS.

How much will the Smart #1 cost in Australia?

The Smart #1 is on sale for $54,900 plus on-road costs and is equipped with a single motor producing 200kW and 343Nm. It has a high level of specification including 19-inch alloy wheels, panoramic roof, driver assistance technology, LED headlights, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and a powered tailgate.

For an additional $4000, the Smart #1 Premium adds a 640W Beats sound system, leather upholstery, matrix headlights and fast charging capability.

At the top of the tree is the performance-focused Smart #1 BRABUS, which features twin motors to deliver 315kW and 543Nm and an acceleration figure to 100km/h of just 3.9 seconds - approaching the performance of the MG4 XPOWER

Sporting unique styling highlights, BRABUS drive mode, red brake callipers and microfibre suede upholstery, the Smart #1 BRABUS is on sale for $67,900 plus on-road costs.

How much will the Smart #3 cost?

The Smart #3 is differentiated from the Smart #1 by its sports coupe silhouette. Both the Pro+ and Premium models follow the same specification of the Smart #1, but are charged at a $3000 price premium.

Apart from the price, the only difference between the two models is an increase in performance, with the Smart #3 promising an improved acceleration time to 100km/h of 5.8 seconds compared to 6.7 seconds in the Smart #1 Pro+ and Premium.

The Smart #3 BRABUS shares the same dual motor set up as the Smart #1 BRABUS but adds 20-inch alloy wheels to further differentiate it on the road. It is also slightly quicker, reaching 100km/h in 3.7 seconds - outperforming the MG4 XPOWER EV.
