Revived car brand smart has unveiled its first medium SUV, the all-electric #5. From pricing to specs, here’s what you need to know about the smart #5 before its arrival in Australia in 2025.

Designed by Mercedes-Benz and to be built by owner Geely in China, the smart #5 will be the largest vehicle produced by the brand to date at 4.7m long - almost twice the size of the iconic smart fortwo.

Previewed at an exclusive media event in Byron Bay, the smart #5 is the first car to receive a global unveiling in Australia in recent memory. The launch location was fitting, allowing smart to preview both the standard #5 and the potentially off-road capable #5 Summit edition, with the backdrop of the Queensland rainforest.

The smart #5 joins the newly launched smart #1 electric car and smart #3 electric coupe which are now on sale in Australia. smart, once the brand of choice for chic city mini cars, is now an electric-only brand globally.

How much will the smart #5 cost?

While there was no confirmed pricing, the smart #5 is expected to sit at the premium end of the medium SUV segment, which is currently the most popular and most competitive vehicle segment in Australia.

Slotting in above the smart #1 and smart #3, it is anticipated that the smart #5 Premium+ could wear a price tag from around $70,000 with the smart #5 Summit likely to start at $90,000.

To best compete, the smart #5 will need to be priced somewhere close to the Tesla Model Y, last year’s best-selling electric car in Australia.

The smart #5 will need to make compelling case for electric-only driving for buyers of plug-in hybrids such as the BYD Sealion 6, as well as the Toyota RAV4 hybrid, the country’s best-selling SUV.

When will the smart #5 launch in Australia?

A launch date for the smart #5 is yet to be officially confirmed, however the car is expected to be launched locally in the second half of 2025.

What is the range of the new smart #5?

The smart #5 will be powered by a 100kWh lithium-ion battery and while local range figures are yet to be released, smart says it is good for 740km range on the optimistic CLTC testing regime. Expect that number to translate to around 550 km on the WLTP test.

Built on an 800V high-voltage platform, with a compatible fast charger, the smart #5 will be able to add 70% charge in just 15 minutes (charging from 10% to 80%). A vehicle to load (V2L) socket in the boot allows devices to run from the battery.

What is the specification of the new smart #5?

Two iterations of the new smart #5 have been revealed so far; the Premium+ and Summit.

All smart #5 models will be finished to a high level of specification including real oak trim and leather upholstery, and will likely be offered in a range of design options including exterior colours with matte paint options, and interior finishes for drivers to personalise their vehicle.

Designers have stayed true to the lifestyle inspiration of the smart #5's design ethos by creating zero-gravity seats with 121 degree reclining angle. Rear head room of 1060mm is on offer for back seat passengers who will also benefit from heating and aeroplane-style LED reading lights with a "First Class" setting.

All seats in the smart #5 can be folded flat, creating an internal space which is the equivalent of a king size mattress.

Storage is plentiful in the smart #5 with a promised 34 storage compartments, a 72-litre frunk and spacious space of up to 1,530-litres in the rear.

An Adventurers’ Collection will be available exclusively on the smart #5 Summit models, adding a roof light bar and electric trailer hitch with underbody protection, a roof carrier, side steps, a side bag and side ladder. The whole collection pays more than a passing reference to the modern Land Rover Defender so it will no doubt appeal to the ‘contemporary adventurers’ the brand is seeking to attract.

What technology features are available in the smart #5?

The smart #5 is equipped with an array of leading technologies which are typically the reserve of larger premium vehicles. The car’s systems are powered by a water-cooled AMD V2000 processor, the most powerful processor available to the automotive industry and systems use the Unreal engine. Smart says #5 drivers should experience fast and seamless in-car assistance system, which will be among the most intuitive once the car arrives.

The distinct personality of the smart brand comes through in the smart #5's infotainment system. Where the smart #1 uses a fox avatar to give its infotainment system some personality, and the smart #3 a leopard, the smart #5 driver will interact with Leo the Lion.

smart used the occasion of the #5 reveal to announce its partnership with premium audio brand Sennheiser. Utilising the brand’s most sophisticated 20 speaker system, including a rising speaker and Dolby Atmos audio software, the smart #5 will offer an audio experience which will be unrivalled in its segment.

Also unrivalled in the segment will be the inclusion of a projector mounted in the front grille of the smart #5 Summit which will allow adventures to set up their own drive-in movie cinema while on the road (or at home). A removable Bluetooth speaker is also included in the smart #5 summit to complete the experience.

Where can I buy the new smart #5?

The smart #5 will go on sale next year exclusively through the LSH Auto network of Mercedes-Benz dealers in Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane.
