Ford has celebrated its 100th anniversary in Australia with the unveiling of the most capable Ford Ranger yet, the worksite-ready Ford Ranger Super Duty that offers a braked towing capacity of 4500kg.

Designed and engineered in Victoria, with direct input from fleet managers and heavy duty industry professionals, Ford says this purpose-built version of the best-selling Ford Ranger has been engineered to bridge the gap between the standard Ranger line-up and the specific needs of those that demand more from their vehicles in Australia’s extreme working and lifestyle environments.

What's different about the Ford Ranger Super Duty's design?

The Ford Ranger Super Duty features a bold design with its "Ultimate Tough" design philosophy. It’s a supersized Ranger, boasting a taller stance, a wider track, and 33-inch General Grabber all-terrain light truck tyres.

The "SUPER DUTY" stamped hood and unique bonnet design with chamfered edges signals strength and capability. A heavy-duty, frame-mounted steel bumper provides enhanced protection to the radiator and headlights in off-road situations, while attachment points for driving lights and a front bash plate add to its functionality. Chunky guards, which are required due to its increased track and larger tyre size, further contribute to this Ranger's robust appearance.

Ford Design paired with Safari to develop Ranger Super Duty’s snorkel, which is uniquely designed to complement the muscular lines of the ute's front fender. The sealed installation raises the air intake height to roof level to deliver cooler and cleaner air to the engine.

The Ford Ranger Super Duty offers braked towing up to 4500kg

How much will the Ford Super Duty tow?

Ford says the Ranger Super Duty will offer a 4500kg gross vehicle mass (GVM), a 4500kg maximum braked towing capacity, and an 8000kg Gross Combined Mass.

The truck was developed with input from fleet operators who needed enhanced capability, durability, and productivity. The development process involved extensive durability testing, including a "mud pack test" to simulate mine work and autonomous driving robot testing at Ford Australia's You Yangs Proving Ground. The Ranger Super Duty also underwent corrosion baths, towing dynos, shaker rig testing, and extreme real-world off-roading.

Smarter towing features available on the Ford Ranger Super Duty include a recalibrated integrated trailer brake controller and Ford’s Pro-Trailer Backup Assist, which uses a yaw rate sensor for faster setup and operation and can remember settings for up to ten trailers. It also debuts Ford's Smart Hitch and Onboard Scales on a Ranger. Smart Hitch helps customers understand towball weight and load distribution, while Onboard Scales estimate payload as items are added to the vehicle.

Will the Ford Ranger Super Duty be good off-road?

While specific power details are yet to be revealed, Ford has confirmed the new Ranger Super Duty will be powered by its 3.0-litre turbocharged diesel V6, calibrated for heavy-duty emissions standards and offering improved cooling.

Drivers will be able to choose from six selectable drive modes, and access an advanced four-wheel drive system with 4A (Automatic 4WD), and front and rear locking differentials as standard. The two-speed transfer case and low-range gearset have been upgraded for enhanced durability in extreme terrain.

To ensure extended off-road range, a 130-litre long-range fuel tank is standard, protected by thick steel shielding. The underside is armoured with high-strength steel bash plates. The frame is unique, engineered for increased strength and load carrying capacity, with reinforced suspension mounts, box mount brackets, and tow bar mounts. Stronger front and rear driveshafts, a heavy-duty rear axle, and eight-stud wheel hubs with larger bolts enhance durability and load carrying capacity.

What technology is included in the Ford Ranger Super Duty?

The Ford Ranger Super Duty features a 12-inch infotainment screen with auxiliary switches located in the overhead console. For those needing to use larger screens or devices, an optional Integrated Device Mounting system can be installed on the passenger side, supporting devices up to 4kg. This system is designed to clear the passenger airbag zone and reduce device vibration.
