Find yourself tossing and turning, unable to get into the deepest realm of sleep? It’s more common than you might think.

A recent study by the Sleep Health Foundation found almost 50 per cent of us regularly have our sleep disturbed. So how much is our bedroom style and environment affecting on our ability to catch enough shut eye?

While of course, there can be external outside factors that affect the quality of your sleep (outside noise, stress, young children), creating a stylish and comfortable sanctuary for relaxation is key to a good night’s sleep. After all, you’re going to spend a third of your life in your bed, so you want to make sure it looks good, and is relaxing and enticing enough to provide you with optimum sleep.

Here are the key tips to turning your bedroom into the ultimate sleep sanctuary.

How to transform your bedroom

How to make your bedroom better for sleep

Choose the right pillow

Having the wrong or right pillow is a big factor in having a better night’s sleep. It is recommended to update your pillow every few years, to make sure you are resting your head on one that is cleaned and meets your comfort levels and requirements.

Take the pillow’s height, density, shape, fill, and comfort level into account to help get one that suits your comfort level to rest on each night.

Get the right mattress

A supportive mattress is key for quality sleep, so take the time to find one that offers comfort and relaxation to suit you.

Snooze have a range of mattresses and bases no matter what type of sleeper you may be, from size (such as King or Queen) to mattress firmness and brand.

Your mattress and bedframe can make or break your quality of sleep, so it is important to get the right mattress for a good night’s rest.

Make your bedroom feel bigger

The room where you lay your head each night should supply a sense of calm that is akin to good sleep. Space can help create a more relaxing atmosphere.

Making the room feel bigger can provide a more relaxed energy, and stop you feeling cramped or ‘boxed in.’ Use a muted palette across your bedding and furniture for a more cohesive, open look.

To make your bedroom look and feel bigger, try:

  • Leaving space on either side of your bed
  • Hanging curtains higher than the railing for the illusion of tall ceilings
  • Keeping your colour palette simple and light
  • Having less possessions crowding the room
  • Adding mirrors to make the room seem larger
  • Introducing a large rug that takes up most of your floor space
  • Getting multi-functional furniture for extra room and storage

Turn down the lights

Light can seriously affect sleep regulation. The amount of darkness in the room affects your circadian rhythm - the ‘sleep-wake cycle’. When aligned, this rhythm can help promote consistent and restorative sleep. However, when affected by outside influences such as light, this sends signals to our brain of alertness, rather than rest.

To counter this, darken your room when it is time to sleep. Consider closing the doors, having black-out curtains, a bedside lamp that isn’t too bright or can be dimmed, and minimising the amount of artificial light you engage with before bed such as laptops, TVs and phones.

Style your bedroom to be sleep-friendly

Ever heard of the psychology of colour? There’s a reason we get hungry looking at certain fast-food logos that are red and yellow, and feel calmer in day spas that are white and mint green.

To provide a room that fills you with feelings of calmness, relaxation, and warmth, look to include soothing colours in your bedroom that are more conducive to sleep, and remove any décor that dates or clutters your space.

On your walls, in your bedding, curtains, rugs, throws and cushions, consider colours, textures and fabrics that will provide you with a sense of relaxation. Think soft blues and greens that can be calming, restful and soothing, or cool greys and whites which provide a neutral sense of balance.

De-clutter your room for a stress-free sleep

Walking into a room and seeing mess or clutter doesn’t automatically fill us with feelings of tranquillity and relaxation. In fact, physical clutter can lead to mental clutter, which activates the brain and negatively affects sleep.

Removing unnecessary items causing clutter and investing in some proper storage solutions will help in creating a harmonious space that is a much more enticing to snooze in.

Add in relaxing scents to help you sleep

Your sense of smell can play a big part in helping calm you before bedtime. Scents such as lavender or incense can provide feelings of relaxation, and can be a crucial factor in reducing anxiety.

To improve the scent in your bedroom, think about adding in products to provide peaceful scents such as candles, air purifiers, incense, and diffusers to make it easier to drift off and feel well-rested.

Bring in a touch of nature

Nature has calming properties, and so whenever possible, look to bring the outside in. Think of indoor-friendly plants, fresh flowers, indoor trees, and even some lavender on your pillow to make your room look feel and smell fresh.

Plants have also been shown to help create a sense of well-being, improved mood and a reduction of stress.

Use the best sounds to get you to sleep

While we can’t always help the external factors that affect sound near our room, we can look to improve the sounds we add to our night-time routine.

If you have difficulty falling asleep or are looking to drown out external noise, consider adding a white noise machine to counter other distractions, or getting some speakers to play sleep sounds that can help with getting you to drift off.

Consider your bedding for a more restful sleep

While your linen and bedding have impact on the aesthetics of your room, have you thought about how it affects your sleep? From the temperature of your linen to the cleanliness of your sheets, your bedding should provide a comfortable refuge for sleep.

From getting quality sheets that accurately fit your bed, to breathable fabrics depending on the season, don’t sacrifice on quality. Make your bedroom a stylish sanctuary of calm, relaxation and rest for the ultimate snooze.
