Reduced visibility prompts RACV warning

RACV is urging motorists to exercise caution on the roads this weekend with high traffic volumes and smoke haze expected to impact post-holiday commutes.

RACV Senior Manager Transport, Peter Kartsidimas, said vigilance on the road was necessary.

“We are expecting to see heavier than normal traffic across the state this weekend as a result of the bushfires,” Mr Kartsidimas said.

“Not only will thousands of Victorians be making the post-holiday trek back home this weekend, many holidaymakers will also be fleeing bushfire affected areas, which means we’ll see more cars on the road,” Mr Kartsidimas said.

“Hot and windy conditions are forecast, and the bushfire danger remains high. Coupled with reduced visibility as a result of smoke haze caused by bushfires across part of the state, it’s important all motorists exercise caution.

“All of these factors mean it will be a difficult few days for drivers across Victoria, and that’s why RACV is urging all motorists to drive in a safe and courteous manner,” he said.

RACV advised motorists travelling over the weekend to:

• Plan their trips and take plenty of breaks when possible
• Drive to the conditions and slow down if necessary
• Turn on your headlights if travelling in areas of low visibility
• Avoid distractions
• Obey all road rules
• Carry plenty of water and woollen blankets if travelling in bushfire areas

“More than 260 people died on Victorian roads in 2019 and we have already had one death this year,” Mr Kartsidimas said.

“If you’re heading home from holidays with your family, or no matter why you’re behind the wheel, remember it is better to arrive a few minutes late than not at all.”

If you are travelling in a bushfire area RACV advises all motorists to:

• check the latest conditions on the CFA website or the Vic Emergency app
• look for possible road closures on the VicRoads website or VicTraffic app
• listen to local radio for the latest fire information and weather conditions.
