Choose a 4 or 6 stage driving program

For learners who want to go beyond the VicRoads 4 stages of learning, our 6-stage program focuses on developing better, safer, more confident drivers. Chat to your instructor about this if you’re interested.

Stage 1: Introduction to driving

You’ll learn about setting up seat position, mirrors, controls and steering position in the vehicle.

Stage 2: Road craft skills

You’ll learn about using mirrors, making turns, road signs and law, low speed manoeuvres, speed limits and forward planning.

Stage 3: Build on prior knowledge & experience

You’ll build on your skills and learn about gap selection, scanning and peripheral vision, safety margin, lane changing and more.

Stage 4: Road to solo driving

You’ll build up to undirected driving without instruction for small trips, commentary driving, parking techniques and planning your route.

Stage 5: Graduated licensing system criteria

You’ll practice criteria for your driving test, including pre-drive check, reverse parking, angle parking, three-point turns and safe decision making.

Stage 6: beyond test routes

You’ll practice interpreting road laws and gaining competency driving in different situations, assessing your own abilities and basic car maintenance checks.

Frequently asked questions

You need to bring:

  • your learners permit (it is a legal requirement to carry your permit while driving on Victorian roads)
  • your logbook or MyLearners app if this applies to your permit
  • any glasses or corrective lenses you need to wear while driving, if required
  • your RACV Drive School voucher or payment for your instructor.

At your first lesson you’ll get an RACV Drive School Training Program to help you keep track of your progress as you build your driving skills and knowledge on the roads.

Yes, parents/guardians can sit in the backseat during a lesson.

This gives parents or guardians a chance to pick up any tips and tricks to support you as a supervising driver and get to know your instructor a little better.

We recommend parents/guardians sit in for one lesson only to allow instructors and students to focus on developing their road craft skills without too many distractions.

If a parent or guardian would like to sit in on a lesson, please discuss options with your instructor.

All RACV Drive School instructors are equipped with 5-star ANCAP safety rated vehicles, so you don’t need to worry about having your own vehicle yet.

Our fleet has the latest technology and safety features, including dual controls to provide extra support to learners who aren’t yet confident on the roads.

Our instructors also have full comprehensive insurance for their vehicles, including Public Liability and Professional Indemnity.

You must provide your instructor with 48 hours notice when cancelling a lesson.

The full lesson fee is payable for any lessons cancelled less than 48 hours before the scheduled lesson time.

There is no minimum number of professional driving lessons required in Victoria. To get your probationary licence you must be at least 18 years old and confident driving in a variety of conditions.

If you are under 21 there are additional requirements to meet. You must also:

  • complete at least 120 hours of supervised driving
  • complete 20 hours of supervised driving at night.

We recommend at least 5-10 hours with a professional instructor depending on your level of confidence and point in your learning to drive journey.

While you don’t need professional driving lessons, using an instructor ensures you develop the right road safety skills to become a safe and confident solo driver. Students using professional instructors have a higher chance of passing on their first attempt.

There are a few costs to consider.

The instructor and car

If you would like to complete your licence test with an RACV instructor and use their car, we recommend booking a lesson with them prior to your test. Please check your instructors availability before booking with VicRoads. The duration of your test may vary.

  • Test only (no warm up lesson): $152
  • 45 minute lesson + test: $215
  • 60 minute lesson + test: $230
  • 90 minute lesson + test: $278

We recommend booking enough time for a lesson with your instructor before the test. Check your instructors availability before booking with VicRoads.

Taking the test

The test is in two parts.

  • Hazard perception test: Free online, in-person fee applies.
  • Practical driving test: Test fee and appointment fee applies.

Visit VicRoads for fees.

Yes, RACV Drive School can accommodate lessons for a variety of different drivers, including learners, licenced drivers, and senior drivers. We can provide refresher lessons to identify any bad habits you may have picked up since becoming a solo driver and ensure you have the necessary skills and knowledge to stay safe on the roads.

Browse our road rules section for more information on understanding Victorian road rules.

Drivers over the age of 60 account for a significant portion of the lives lost on Victorian roads (according to the TAC). It’s important to stay up to date with the latest road rules and safety techniques.
